Banana Yoshimoto was born in Tokoyo Japan on July 24, 1964. Her real name is Yoshimoto Mahoko. She is the daughter of Yoshimoto Takaaki, an influential Japanese philosopher.
She graduated from Nihon University’s Art College majoring in literature. The pen name “Banana” given to her because of her love for banana Flowers. Yoshimoto is known for her writing and was awarded the 39th edition Best Newcomer Artists for her book Kitchen. She is also known for her books like Asleep, Goodbye Tsugumi, and the Lake Amirta.
With her first work, “Kitchen” she won the 6th Kaien Newcomer Writers Prize in November 1987 and then the 16th Izumi Kyoka Literary Prize in October 1988.
In May 1989 “TUGUMI” was awarded the 2nd Yamamoto Shugoro Literary Prize.
In November 1995 “Amurita” won the 5th Murasaki-shikibu Prize named after the authoress of the Story of Genji.
Outside of Japan, she was awarded a few prizes in Italy; Literary Prize Scanno in June 1993 and Fendissime Literary Prize in March 1996 and Literary Prize Maschera d’ argento in November 1999.
Yoshimoto works describe the problems faced by youth and teenagers trapped between imagination and reality. Yoshimoto wrote her books much close to the realities of life.
